The Old Man sits lonely in his ancient deck chair and surveys his garden. He is ill and he knows it but is too tired and too idle to take sensible action. His wife has died and he finds it nigh impossible to live with the consequences of his past actions. He reclines in pain on his chair and thoughts of his life come flooding back. His long-suffering wife had been obliged to cope with chauvinism and infidelity and he curses himself for his part in such perfidy. There are incidents in The Old Man’s life that are amusing, sad, romantic and deceitful; the last category of which, he sincerely regrets. Not that all is regret as he thinks of the exciting and cool times melded with the adventures of his past.
Now he gets pleasure in bemoaning many things that reflect the fast-moving developments in modern society with which he cannot come to terms. His story reveals unexpected knowledge of history, science and philosophy as well as a fondness of reminiscence and poetry.
The tale is amusing and nostalgic, despair with anguish and determination with understanding and is aimed at those who like biographical narratives - or just a good read about a period of history with which they can all relate.
